Cafe Luxembourg is a good NYC restaurant for boozy brunch, business dinners, casual dates, celebrity sightings, first dates, entertaining out of town friends, outdoor dining, breakfast a parent visit and people watching. here are a few details:
Good For Boozy Brunch: While definitely not a “party brunch” restaurant, it has a solid morning cocktail list and will do the job of easing you into weekend afternoons.
Good For Business Meals: Open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. or midnight every day, the high-end yet unpretentious atmosphere and spectacular service make it a really good choice for a business breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Good For Casual Dates: Best for this if you go at off hours as it can get crowded at peak times. There are plenty of intimate nooks for a romantic yet casual meal.
Good For Celebrity Sightings: The same older neighborhood residents who frequent other Upper West Side “hot spots” are often seen here.
Cafe Luxembourg’s Address: 200 W. 70th St. (at Amsterdam – Upper West Side)
A few years ago, tasked with choosing a restaurant for brunch with my aunt who was venturing in from Connecticut, I called on my go-to friend for tips. Said friend wrote for Bon Appetit for years and knows the layout of the foodie world well. She recommended Cafe Luxembourg as a “classic Upper West Side restaurant with a great brunch.” And that is exactly what it is – everything about this place screams classic yet comfortable. The food is good, the service is great and the atmosphere is old New York meets European.
More recently, while dating someone who lived in the neighborhood, I became pretty familiar with the restaurant and can now say it’s one of my favorite places uptown – mainly because it transports you to a different time and place on those days when, as much as you love it here, you just need something else.
