The adorably tiny Mercadito in the East Village is a good NYC restaurant for girls’ dinners, spotting beautiful people, big groups, casual dates and small bites. Some precautions below:
Good For Groups: I’ve pulled off group dinners of 8 or so here but be forewarned that it won’t necessarily be the most comfortable of seating arrangements. However, the back room can totally accommodate if you reserve your table in advance. The casual, celebratory atmosphere makes it a good choice for big parties – particularly birthday dinners.
Good For Small Bites: They have an awesome selection of Southern Mexican dishes from chef Patricio Sandoval. These also pair very well with the huge variety of margaritas offered.
Good For Casual Dates: Not necessarily a casual first date but it’s a fun spot to take someone you’ve been out with a few times. The crowd is hipster East Village and you’ll be surrounded by some pretty good looking people. But, if you want to sling back a few too many cocktails and grab some food you won’t be embarrassed to tackle in front of your date, this is it.
Bonus Tip: When the front wall isn’t open (i.e. in winter), do not sit at the table by the door. I slammed the poor guy who was stuck there 2-3 times while in the process of searching for my friends in the neighborhood.
