While I wouldn’t recommend stepping past the patio though the doors inside unless sufficiently intoxicated, White Horse Tavern in the West Village is a great NYC dive bar/restaurant for cheap drinks, outdoor seating, big groups, boozy brunch, lunch, people watching, small bites paired with copious amounts of alcohol, casual dates, finding one night stands and entertaining out of town friends. Here are some more details:
Good For Boozy Brunch: By which I mean, in this case, a brunch that is boozy with a splash of food. The menu offerings are subpar at best (though the hummus is shockingly good) but sitting outside on the patio for an afternoon is one of the best experiences the West Village has to offer. Bask in the sun as you watch more productive people jog by – the people watching really is incredible. Also, it works well for big groups with low expectations.
Good For Small Bites: If you’re looking for greasy bar food, you’ve found your home. The fully loaded potato skins are the size of your head and there are plenty other hangover cures available to sooth your soul.
Good For One Night Stands: Later in the night, this place is filled with drunks looking for a strong nightcap. Dylan Thomas supposedly drank himself to death here and the crowd seems determined to do the same on a nightly basis. If you’re desperate for someone to bring home, finish your night here and try your luck. Make sure they’re at least half coherent first, though.
Good For Casual Dates: As in, the kind of casual date where you’ve already put said date in the “sex only” category. There’s nothing impressive about White Horse Tavern but there is a lot of fun to be had.
